About Crystal Springs Mississippi
Crystal Springs was founded by a Methodist preacher named Elisha Lott in 1823. The name originated from the bubbling springs he found at the site where he settled. This same year Copiah County was created, and people began to build a church, school, homes, a grist mill and a lumber mill. In 1855, citizens of Crystal Springs had to decide whether or not to construct a railroad from New Orleans to Jackson. The railroad came three years later, and Crystal Springs began to relocate closer to the railroad. The city then began to grow as a major produce shipping center and remained as such until after World War II. Crystal Springs is known for Chautauqua Park which was built in honor of the Chautauqua Movement. While the religious group only lasted until 1917, the park remains, and some of the original buildings were reconstructed. The park held a tabernacle, near 100 cottages, a hotel, a restaurant, and a grocery store.
