About Florence Mississippi

The first family to settle Florence was the Steen family, a mother and four sons who lost their father while in Tennessee when he went to find their lost mule. At this time the town was named Steen’s Creek. Later in the 1820’s, John B. Lewis arrived and became the first postmaster and storekeeper, also running a racetrack. Soon, Steen’s Creek, or Florence as it’s known now, became a resort town for men to drink and bet on races over the weekend. From 1824 to 1878, two churches were built; one being Methodist and the other Baptist. These two churches are still standing today. These were also means of education in Florence until school houses were built. By 1900, Florence had become a thriving center for cotton, and a man named W. Ellis agreed to give some of his land for the railroad if it was named after his wife Florence. The city soon changed its name to match the railroad. In 1979, a town hall was built, and finally when a new street was dedicated in 2004, a town square was built. The city is still a small town dripping with southern charm.
