About Jackson Mississippi

Although Jackson is now the largest city in Mississippi with over 170,000 residents, the town began as part of the Choctaw nation. After settlers began to flock to Jackson, the Choctaw Native Americans agreed to be relocated away from the eastern portions of the river. The first settler was a French Canadian trader named Louis LeFleur who changed the town’s name from the initial Parkerville to LeFleur’s Bluff. In 1821, a need for a centrally located capital city sent several important men searching. When all they found was swampland, they began to search along Pearl River. When they came across LeFleur’s Bluff they could see that it had good water, timber, and navigable waters, and it was located near the trading route of Natchez Trace. The city became the capital and was named after General Andrew Jackson. During the Civil War, Jackson became a center for manufacturing, and many battles were fought within the city. Now many of the structures from the time period still stand. The town also has a history from World War II when an airbase was established that included a flying school where all Dutch military aircrews were trained. Later, Jackson became the center for many protests, including those for Civil Rights and those against the Vietnam War. Today many developments are underway, including a convention center.
