About Yazoo City Mississippi
Yazoo City was founded in 1824 under the name Hannan’s Bluff. After being renamed Manchester it was finally named Yazoo City in 1839. Ten years later, it became Yazoo County’s county seat. In following years Yazoo City faced many disasters that would practically destroy the town including two break outs of yellow fever. In 1904, a fire destroyed all but the courthouse and ten homes. Local legend says the fire was started by a witch avenging her death, but it was actually caused when a young boy was playing with matches. In 1927, a flood destroyed much of the rebuilt city, but the residents built better flood prevention systems. There have also been two minor tornadoes in recent years, but few were injured. Today, Yazoo City has about 15,000 residents.
