5 Expert Tips for Water Heater Maintenance
There are many types of water heaters, and while they are generally very reliable and don’t break
down much, keeping them in good order is common sense; it’s the water that you are washing in, drinking and using for other home chores. It would make sense to keep it clean and functional!
1. Sacrificial Anode
Many of the tank-style water heaters have these fitted; they are designed to help with corrosion in the tank and do so by having an increased negative electrochemical potential than the metal in the tank. These need replacing at reasonably regular intervals, so it is certainly worth inspecting them every two years.
Over the years, the build-up of sediment in the tank can drastically affect its performance, making it more in-efficient and actually taking up space that should be filled by water; this will cost you because you are unable to heat up as much water as possible. The sediment should be emptied every few years.
3. Shut it off
If you’re going to be away from home for four or five days, shut the power off to it; you don’t really need to be heating up a tank of water and then keeping it hot while you’re away. This will also benefit your energy bills.
Regular servicing of your water heater can dramatically increase its lifespan. Not only that, but ensuring that it is working correctly and efficiently will also lower your energy bills. Regular servicing will enable you to see any early warning signs of failure or problems, allowing you to rectify them before they become too serious.
