As the weather starts to warm up, you’re going to be using your air conditioner quite a bit to keep comfortable during the day. It’s important that you keep an eye out for warning signs that indicate a problem with your air conditioner during this time. If you can identify any problems with your air conditioner quickly, you can have them repaired faster and prevent more damage to the system. The following are some of the more common issues you might run into this summer and their warning signs.
Your air conditioner relies entirely on its supply of refrigerant to keep your home cool. If the refrigerant line develops a leak, as can happen, then it will start to affect the system’s ability to cool the home. As the refrigerant level drops in the air conditioner, its cooling capacity will drop as well. Finally, it will reach a point where the refrigerant level is so low that it will break down entirely. If you notice fluid leaking from your air conditioner, especially if it is accompanied by dropping output, it’s a good idea to call for repairs as soon as you can.
If your air conditioner is turning itself on and off every few minutes instead of completing a full cooling cycle, that means it’s short cycling. Short cycling can be caused by electrical issues, or by a malfunctioning compressor. What matters, however, are the effects. Short cycling reduces the air conditioner’s ability to cool the home, but it also increases the rate at which the system wears down. The longer an air conditioner is allowed to short cycle, the more likely it will break down. Short cycling can also reduce the overall lifespan of the air conditioner by a number of years, so make sure that you call for repairs as soon as you notice your system doing this.
Air Handler Failure
The air handler is the part of the air conditioner that actually blows air throughout the home while it’s operating. No air handler—no ability for the air conditioner to cool the home. Inside the air handler are a number of oiled bearings that are meant to limit the amount of friction the system has to deal with while it’s on. If you hear a grinding sound coming from your air conditioner, it might mean that the air handler bearings are worn out and need to be replaced. If you don’t replace the bearings in time, the air handler motor can burn out. That is quite a bit more expensive to replace than a few bearings, so we recommend that you act quickly to get this problem taken care of.
