Commercial Plumbing Issues You Need to be Aware of

pipe-inspectionCommercial plumbing systems have a lot to deal with, even compared to residential systems. It’s not easy to keep everything flowing smoothly while the plumbing is being used by over a hundred people throughout the day. If you operate a commercial property, there are a number of commercial plumbing problems that you should know to keep an eye out for. If you can detect any rising issues between maintenance appointments, you’ll be able to have them professionally repaired faster and prevent more damage to the system. Have a look at the symptoms below that your commercial plumbing system is in need of repairs.

Frequent Drain Clogs/Backups

It’s not unusual to have a clog or backup happen in commercial drains every once in a while. You should start to become concerned if it happens frequently after being cleaned out, though. That could indicate that there is some sort of issue located further down in the sewer system, one that needs to be dealt with before it gets any worse.

Horrible Smells

Generally, the plumbing appliances in your building should not be making the surrounding areas smell like a swamp. If you have horrible smells coming out of your building’s drains, it’s a sign that something isn’t right with your plumbing system. You should have a professional take a look at it as soon as possible.

Leaks

As with residential systems, leaks are never a good thing for commercial plumbing. Even a small leak can cause an incredible amount of water damage if it’s left alone for a long enough period of time. You should always have a professional plumber repair any leaks you find in the system, no matter how small they are.

Lime Scale

In areas with hard water, lime scale will often build up in the pipes and restrict the flow of water. The longer the problem is allowed to develop, the more it will hinder the plumbing system’s efficiency. If the lime scale isn’t removed in time, it will eventually harden and become impossible to remove without damaging the pipes. If you don’t want to have to replace large section of your building’s pipes due to this issue, it’s a good idea to schedule maintenance on an annual basis to catch lime scale before it gets too far.

Bellying

Commercial buildings have one more problem to deal with that residences often don’t: bellying. This is when the soil around a pipe shifts over time, causing it to sink into a U-shape and restricting the flow. This can cause all kinds of issues for the line, up to and including a pipe rupture. Since the only pipes that have to deal with this are your sewer and water lines, it’s a good idea to have them checked on a regular basis to make sure they’re not in danger.
