How to Respond to an Emergency Plumbing Situation

burst-pipeNot all plumbing problems happen during convenient hours. Of course, it’s almost never convenient to have a pipe burst or a drain backflow. Some problems can at least wait long enough for an appointment to be scheduled with a plumbing contractor, but severe issues cannot. If you have a plumbing emergency that absolutely has to be dealt with right now, there are a number of steps that you should take to manage the situation. Have a look below to find out what to do in the event of a plumbing emergency.

Turn Off the Water!

The usual distinguishing characteristic that separates “plumbing problem” from “plumbing emergency” is the level of damage the issue can do in a short amount of time. Usually, the kind of damage that results from a plumbing issue is water damage. So, the first thing you should do in a plumbing emergency is turn off the water to that area! If you have an automatic shutoff valve installed, this should already have happened. If not, you’re going to have to do it manually. It’s a very good idea to know ahead of time where your manual shutoff valve is. The location isn’t standardized, and a home could have the valve located in any one of a handful of different locations. Turning off the water may be inconvenient while you’re waiting for a plumber to arrive, but it’s better than having your second floor flood in the interim.

Mop Up the Area

Even if you turned off the water to the problem area, chances are there’s already some water damage. It’s a good idea to try and mop up the area around the problem as best you can. You should also remove any furniture or other fixtures that may be susceptible to water damage. This may seem a small step, but it can prevent water from soaking into the floor and causing mold growth down the line. It also will make it easier for the plumber to reach the problem when they arrive. Considering how expensive it can be to have water damage remediation done on a home, every little bit you can do to prevent the need for it will help.

Call for Professional Emergency Services

Once you’ve turned off the water and cleaned up the area as best you can, the only thing left to do is to call a professional to take care of the issue. Most plumbing contractors do not offer emergency plumbing services, and those that do may have restrictions on when they can be contacted. Make sure that you find a contractor you can trust to be there for you, no matter when you have need of them. Not much use in having an emergency plumber if they aren’t around when you need them.
