Why an Automatic Shutoff Valve is a Good Idea

burst-pipeDo you know where your manual water shutoff valve is? If not, you definitely should. The water shutoff valve is designed to cut off all water flowing into the home’s plumbing system. This is most often used when involved plumbing work needs to be done, like installing a new water line. However, it is also commonly used in case of a plumbing emergency that could cause a lot of water damage. Your plumber will take care of the water shutoff valve in the first case. If you have a sudden pipe rupture or other plumbing emergency occur, though, you really want to make sure you can shut the water flow off yourself as quickly as possible.

But that creates a whole new issue. The thing is: the location of the water shutoff valve is not standardized across all homes. Your water valve could be in one of several places, and if you don’t know where it is, you don’t want to go looking for it while a burst pipe is turning the ground floor of your home into a pool. This is one of the main reasons why an automatic shutoff valve is a good idea.
