Why is My Air Conditioner Making Clicking Noises?

When an air conditioner turns on, there will always be an accompanying clicking sound as the compressor kicks on. If this sound occurs several times in a row, however, there may be a problem with the thermostat and its relay function. A thermostat that is not working correctly may send repeated signals to the air conditioning unit, turning the compressor on and off and causing a series of clicking noises. This kind of malfunction requires electrical repair work. If there is no noticeable difference in air temperature after the compressor clicks on, meanwhile, the compressor itself may be defective and require repairs. There are a few other part failures that may cause clicking sounds, but most require professional inspection and repair. In most cases, it is easiest for homeowners to schedule a maintenance check-up when they notice this sound.
